Columbia

Columbia South Carolina is the state capital and is the largest city in South Carolina.  It has a population of 130,591 and is located in Richland County.   The name Columbia was derived from Christopher Columbus and was suggested by Senator John Lewis Gervais.  Columbia was approved as the capital of the state on March 22, 1786.The city of Columbia is located in Richland County and some parts of Lexington County.  Columbia is at the junction of 2 rivers the Saluda and the Broad which come together to form the Congaree River.  Columbia is also home to the  University of South Carolina (Carolina Gamecocks).  Columbia is one of the first planned cities in the United States.

Columbia’s Mayor is Steve Benjamin.  The city of Columbia is council-manager form of government. The average high temperature in the month of June is 90 degrees.
